Test Your Game

The next time you go out and play, practice playing 9 holes from 125 yards and closer to the hole.

Remember there are 8 principles to the game:
•    Full Swing
•    Course Strategy
•    Pitching
•    Chipping
•    Distance Wedges
•    Putting
•    Trouble Shots
•    Bunker Play

Pay attention to how well you do in each of these elements, and you will be amazed where you strengths and weaknesses are.

  1. I’m going to try the 125 yrd test this afternoon. How do I score a par four that I can’t get to the 125 yrd mark with my tee shot?

    thanks

    • I’M ASSUMING THAT ON A PAR 3 THE 125 MARK WOULD BE THE 1st SHOT. THE 125 MARK ON A PAR 4 WOULD BE THE SECOND SHOT. AND THE 125 MARK ON A PAR 5 WOULD BE THE 3rd SHOT?? OR SHOULD WE JUST PLAY EACH HOLE AS A PAR 3?

      • Al–depends the type of golfer. Just practice from these distances and your game will go to a new level.

  2. I go and play an executive course often just to work on my short game. I for sure know where my weaknesses are. I score worse there than I do on a long course. It’s definitely a humbling experience.

    • Becky–executive courses are so much fun. You can definitely sharpen your short-game on these courses.

  3. Hi Shawn
Do you have a Hump Day tip on what causes a Shank?
I have almost got the “yips” now this has crept into my game
My driving and putting are great!
    Thanks, John

  4. I thank you for your playing tips, they have taken a lot of negatives out of my game when I thought I was getting too old to play the game

    • Jack–great to hear you are grinding it out. One is never too old to enjoy this great game.

  5. I went out late and used this drill. I played a white and yellow ball on each of the nine holes from 85-125 yards. It was really amazing how I focused on the principles. Everything seemed to be magnified in terms of importance. I was able to get up and down more often than a regular round. I look forward to playing in this manner again and look for improvements in my overall game.

    • Anthony–great to hear you’re putting this to work. You are finding out its a game changer. Keep it going!

      • Thanks, Shawn.

Had 83 today. My best round of the season. The short game practice really helped me on the course. I’m applying short game techniques (ratios) with greater success. I’m finding your Blueprint series very helpful and am wondering if you have “schools” lined up for the new year.

        Anthony

        • Anthony–great to hear of your progress. We don’t have our calendar finalized for 2014 schools. Keep checking the site though.
